Why Summer Fridays Are the Ultimate Workplace Test

Let’s get real about Summer Fridays: the sun’s out, UV index is off the charts, and the breeze is basically whispering, “Why are you inside?” As a full time employee who goes into an office every day, (and someone who knows a good ice cream truck chase is a valid form of self-care), I have to ask: what on earth could possibly make someone CHOOSE the office over a lazy day by the pool?

And listen, this isn’t just theory. During our recent ½ the Space, Twice the Experience luncheon, I shared a memory from my own pre-hybrid days: the office was THE place to be. There was this genuine fear of missing out, a sense that if you weren’t there, you would miss something big. I still remember all of us secretly gathering in the pantry around the frozen margarita machine that started churning at 10 a.m. every Friday from Memorial Day to Labor Day (this was pre-Teams, pre-Slack, before every conversation was a ping or a group chat). We’d conspire about whether our boss would close the office early for the Fourth of July weekend, and honestly, those moments brought us together in a way Zoom never could. It was fun, it was a little rebellious, and it was the kind of bonding that made the office magnetic. If your office can win on Fridays in July, you’re not just doing something right you’re creating a workplace people talk about. That’s the secret sauce.

Here’s what we are seeing and hearing from facilities managers, HR leaders, and those of us who geek out on workplace culture: it’s not about the desk. It’s about the experience. People are looking for a reason to commute, and the days of “just showing up” are so 2019. The real question is: what does your space offer that home (or the beach) doesn’t?

Maybe it’s the spark of a brainstorm that can only happen face-to-face. Maybe it’s a rooftop lunch that feels more like a mini vacation than a meeting. Maybe it’s just the vibe the kind that greets you with iced coffee, open windows, and maybe the World Cup streaming in the background (World Cup watch party, anyone?).

Thoughtful design and intentional culture tell your team: “this place was BUILT for you.”

So, how do you actually earn the commute? Here’s how the best workplaces are hacking summer:

  •  Summer-only programming—think ice cream carts, surprise lunches, speakers that make Fridays feel like an event (not a chore).
  •  Spaces that flex with the season. Open up to the outdoors. Add greenery, natural light, and a little fresh air. Make people forget they’re “stuck inside.”
  •  Floorplans that let people choose heads-down work or spontaneous collaboration. The point is, nobody should be thinking “Why did I come in today?”
  •  Amenities with a pulse. Think acoustics, temperature, tactile materials—and yes, an iced coffee station that says, “we see you, we appreciate you.”

Instead of designing our workspaces as just places to sit; let’s reimagine them into places where good stuff happens. The collaboration, the spark, the energy, the Friday afternoon where no one’s rushing out the door because the vibe is just that good.

Creating spaces that go from functional to magnetic is the future of the workplace. It’s how you earn your spot in someone’s week; even when the weather is working against you.

Stay impactful (and don’t forget the SPF!),
